Crochet Donnie Darko Amigurumi

Coming at you with another Amigurumi. This time it is Donnie Darko! Donnie Darko is my favorite movie. Since it is almost Halloween, I thought it was fitting to try to make a little Donnie Darko. This is what I came up with and honestly I think it is one of my favorite things that I have made. I used this pattern here for the base and I came up with his little hoodie.

I used safety eyes for his eyes. I sewed him a little mouth by pulling yarn through the back and around the front where I wanted it to be and then putting the yarn back inside. I just tied it in a knot and called it good. The little bones are iron on transfers and I just glued them on. For his hair I drew the outline of where I wanted his hair to be and then I just kind of filled it in with yarn. It's kind of hard to explain how I did it.

I came up with my own pattern for his hoodie and then I sewed his arms on outside of it to secure it on his body. His little hood even comes off.

That's about it! I'm really happy with the way he came out. I think it's super cute and he's going to look totally awesome on my bookcase.

Elder Wand Crochet Hook + new listing!

I got requested a LONG time ago to do this crochet hook. I had tried one attempt, didn't like it and then gave up on making another one. For whatever reason I got inspired to try to make it again. My skills have gotten better and I have better tools and techniques so I figured the second attempt would be better. Sure enough it was! I think this one came out pretty neat.

It is made out of tan polymer clay. I used different sized dotting tools to make weird oblong circles on it. Then I painted it with different shades of brown paint. I used a pencil and black paint to paint the small details on the band.

I think it came out pretty good and fairly true to the movie wand. I'm going to be selling these on Etsy. I normally do tutorials with these but wasn't sure if anyone was going to be interested in seeing that but if you are, you can shoot me a comment or message and I would be more than willing to put one up! If that's not your thing you can buy one from my etsy here.

I have other crochet hooks that you can make that you can find in my tutorial page here.

Crochet Superman Amigurumi

It's been forever since I have posted anything! I normally try to post once a month but the past few months I haven't had a whole lot of motivation but I'm back and I should have a few blogs out over the next few weeks (hopefully)

Anyway, I work at a comic book store and thought I would make something for the guys at work. I decided on Superman because I thought he would be the simplest to put together. I used this pattern here. I have used this pattern before and I liked it. This time I decided to do joined rounds and I got a better result this time.

I used felt for his cape and iron on transfers (these are becoming my favorite for logos) for the logo. I just used glue to put the cape and logo on because I'm too lazy to sew it on. Since he will probably never need to be washed I didn't find it problematic. I used safety eyes for his eyes. I also figured out a better way to give him hair. I think the end result is pretty awesome and cute.

The guys at work thought he was neat. One guy is a huge Superman fanatic so he absolutely loved him. He looks pretty cool in the comic book shop.

If you guys have any questions on how I put him together feel free to ask. He was pretty simple to put together. It is not my pattern but I can tell you where I did color changes and things like that. :)

Crochet Colorado Avalanche Amigurumi

I think I mentioned in one of my other posts that I like hockey. I also like to crochet and my favorite team is the Avalanche. I figured I might as well try to crochet a little Avalanche player. I'm not one to crochet a lot of other things besides hats. I thought I would take myself out of my comfort zone a bit. I used this pattern. I worked in continuous rounds, which I do not suggest.

I ended up with some obvious color jumps, which I expected. The whole thing pulled sort of funny one way. If I decided to make another one I will not be using continuous rounds again. For the number I just used felt and for the name and the logo on the front I used printable iron transfers. I used E6000 to glue the number and the name. Again, I would not suggest this. It ended up being messy and didn't look very good. For the logo I used tacky glue. This worked a little better but it left residue.

I think the hair is my least favorite about the whole thing. I couldn't get it to the look the way I wanted it to. I think I put way too much of it. I used yarn and wrapped it around  a credit card and then cut it in half. I used one piece of yarn and pulled it through the stitches. I think he has way too much hair. For the face I used safety eyes and I embroidered (badly) the mouth.

My favorite part is probably his little socks and feet. I think overall he came out pretty cute and maybe I'll try to make other players. :)

Crochet LA Kings logo

I posted the New York Rangers logo yesterday and now I'm going to post the LA Kings one. I will say this one came out a lot bigger than I thought it would. If I decide to make another I will probably make it a little differently. I will get to that later though. This is what I came up with.

I crocheted the base and needle felted the letters on there. The crown is an iron on transfer. For this you are going to have to know some basic color changes and how to carry the yarn. You will also need to know how to single crochet decrease.

For the base
Hook size F/5- 3.75 mm

With grey, chain 21

Row 1-10- 1 grey stitch (carry the yarn,) 18 black stitches, 1 grey stitch, ch 1 and turn
On the last row change colors to grey
Row 11- 1 grey stitch in each. change colors to white, ch 1 and turn
Row 12- 1 white stitch in each, change colors to grey, ch1 and turn
Row 13- 1 grey stitch in each,  ch 1 and turn
Row 14- 16 (3 rows)- 1 grey stitch (carry the yarn,) 18 black stitches, 1 grey stitch, ch 1 and turn
Row 17- 1 SC decrease with grey, finish the stitch with black, 1 SC decrease with black, 1 SC in next 12 stitches, 1 black SC decrease, finish the stitch with grey, 1 SC decrease with grey. Ch 1 and turn
Row 18- 1 SC decrease with grey, finish the stitch with black, 1 SC decrease with black, 1 SC in next 8 stitches, 1 black SC decrease, finish the stitch with grey, 1 SC decrease with grey. Ch 1 and turn
Row 19- 1 SC decrease with grey, finish the stitch with black, 1 SC decrease with black, 1 SC in next 4 stitches, 1 black SC decrease, finish the stitch with grey, 1 SC decrease with grey. Ch 1 and turn
Row 20- 1 SC decrease with grey, 2 SC decrease with black, 1 SC decrease with grey. Ch 1 and turn
Row 21- With grey 2 SC decreases. Ch 1, and turn
Row 22- With grey, 1 SC decrease. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Like I said if i decide to make any more of these I plan on doing them slightly differently. I think I'll make the whole base black except for the rows that need to be grey and white and then I'll just SC a grey border around the whole thing. I thought doing it the way I did would look better but towards the bottom with the decreases there are some very obvious color changes that I do not like.

Once you're finished with the base it should look something like this. ^

For the LA part, I printed out a logo about the same size as the crocheted one. I took an Xacto knife and cut out the L and the A. I taped it on the crochet piece and used it as sort of a stencil for the needle felting. If you don't want to or don't know how to needle felt, you can just use felt to cut out the letters and you can glue or sew them on.

Although I think it would look fine without the crown, I wanted to find a way to put it on there. I tried felt but the crown was just too small and detailed for it to come out right. I ended up buying iron on transfers.

I just followed the directions in the package. I ironed mine on felt, cut it out, and glued it on and then sewed it on the crocheted piece. If you plan on washing these, I suggest using a washable glue or sewing it on there.

That's how I made a LA Kings logo. If you have any questions always feel free to ask. I'm normally pretty quick at responding to questions and emails. :)

Crochet New York Rangers Logo

I like hockey and I like crochet, so obviously I should crochet hockey stuff. I've been wanting to crochet more hockey logos and make more hockey inspired crafts. I decided to start with this years Stanley Cup finalists. I started with the New York Rangers and I'll have LA out soon too. This is what I came up with.

I crocheted the base and just needle felted the details on.

For the base
Hook size- F/5- 3.75 mm

Chain 21
Row 1- SC second chain from the hook, 1 SC in each stitch, ch1, turn
Row 2- 2 SC decreases, 1 SC in next 12 stitches, 2 SC decreases, ch 1, turn
Row 3- 2 SC decreases, 1 SC in next 8 stitches, 2 SC decreases, ch 1, turn
Row 4-13 (10 rows)- 1 SC in each stitch, ch 1, turn
Row 14- 1 SL ST in first 5 stitches, 1 DC in next 2 stitches, 5 SL ST. Fasten off and weave in loose ends. Leave a long tail if you're going to sew it onto something else.

You should have something like this.

For the details you can use felt or sew them on. I needle felted mine on there. I found that the felt was too hard to get the letters cut out. I didn't trust myself to try to embroider them either.

I printed out a logo that was about the same size as the base. I used an Xacto knife to cut out where I would be detailing on the base. I just used this as kind of a stencil. Obviously this isn't going to come out perfect. You're going to have to peel off the stencil and work the felt in more to get it the way you want. For the lines I just free-handed them since they are such a fine detail. I also free-handed the points at the top of logo too. I used felting wool for the white and I cut up red yarn and used that for the red, since I didn't have an red felting wool.

That's pretty much all I did. If you have any questions always feel free to ask. I'm normally pretty quick at responding to questions and emails. :)

Molly Weasley Wand Crochet hook + update

Well I've been MIA for a while. I've honestly haven't had any creative drive. I was busy with school and that kind of sucked all of my creativity and energy away. I have been stressing out trying to find a job. I've also been busy with etsy orders that I haven't had the chance to create anything new. I did however, get a custom order for a Molly Weasley wand crochet hook. This is what I came up with.

I used multiple browns to try to make it look like wood. Then I used really water downed acrylic paint as almost a "stain" because I thought it was a little too light. Then I used brown acrylic on the top and bottom too give it a bit more dimension.

The images aren't showing up true to color but I think it came out pretty alright. It's not one of my favorites that I've done but I still like the way it came out.

How to make a TARDIS charm out of polymer clay

I think I've mentioned this before but I'm not really a Doctor Who fan. I like to make things from that show though. I think the fandom is pretty cool and they have a lot of icons from it. A lot of the shows I do watch, don't really have that. I know Doctor Who is really popular right now. I figured I would make little TARDIS charms. You can add little rings to put them on a chain or a keyring if you want or just leave it and they can just hang out on your desk or shelf.

Things you will need
  • Blue, black, and white polymer clay
  • Knife
  • Something pointy to carve with. I used a yarn needle but you could use a toothpick or something.
  • Blue acrylic paint
  • Copper wire if you want to make it into a charm

1. Take a chunk of blue clay and work it into a rectangular prism. I just squeezed the sides and then the top and bottom until I got it the shape I wanted. Don't worry about it being perfect, we'll fix it in the next step.

2. Cut the top and bottom off to flatten them out. Then pinch the sides out. (If that makes sense)

3. Take another small piece of blue clay and flatten it out. Then cut out a smaller square than the top of the base. Rub out any seams and put it on top of base.

4. Take small pieces of black clay and flatten them out and make them into little rectangles. Cut them to size and put them at the top of each base.

5. Take small pieces of white clay and make them into little squares. Mine aren't perfect and are a little more round but I think they still look good. Put these under the black bars for the windows.

6. Take another small piece of white clay and put it on top to make the little light.

7. Take your toothpick or something pointy and draw little squares underneath the windows. Two on each side.

This step is optional. If you want to create a ring so you can put these on a chain or something, this is how you do it.

Take some copper wire and wrap one end around the other a few times and then cut it. Leave enough tail to anchor it into the TARDIS.

8. Now bake according to packages instructions. I baked mine for about 30 minutes.

9. Once it gets out of the oven and it is cooled, use blue acrylic paint to add the lines for the windows. That's it!

I had a little fun taking pictures of these. I finally got to use my new camera.

If you have any questions, always feel free to ask. I'm normally pretty quick to respond. :)

If you don't want to make one you can buy one from my etsy. :)

Philadelphia Flyers Crochet Logo

I just wanted to make a quick post about what I've been crocheting. I started a really big afghan that is going to take me a while to finish so I've been trying to make smaller things to keep me from getting bored with the project. I thought I would be able to make the Flyers' logo so I took a whack at it. I think it came out pretty alright. It definitely needs a little tweaking but for the most part, I think it came out pretty good. I'm not going to post the pattern because I honestly don't think anyone would be interested but if you are let me know and I would be more than happy to share it. :)

Update: I got asked to share it, the pattern is in the comments but I'll just add it to the blog.

Crochet Colorado Flag Earwarmer pattern

I'm from Colorado. I've lived here my whole life. Although I always talk about moving out of state, I know my heart is here. Recently the Colorado Flag has been HUGE here. I see it everywhere. It's on everything. From hats to t-shirts to just about anything. I've come up with some different items with the flag incorporated into it and this is one of them! This is perfect for those cold Colorado mornings or for a jog around the neighborhood. Looks cute with a bun or a ponytail. It's pretty easy to make too!

For the headband

Hook size J/10- 6.00 MM

With blue, I'm using Lily Sugar 'N Cream cotton yarn
Foundation HDC 54 stitches, ch 2, turn
(I personally like to start with foundation chains instead of normal chains. I think they look better and they are a better gauge of what size you need. If you don't know how to do a foundation HDC, here is a good video or you can just chain 56 and do your first stitch in the 2nd chain from the hook and do one row of HDC and follow the rest of the directions like normal.)

Row 2 & 3- 1 HDC in each stitch, ch 2, turn. At end of third row change colors to white.

Row 4-6- 1 HDC in each stitich, ch 2, turn. At end of sixth row change colors to blue.

Row 7-9- 1 HDC in each stitch, ch 2, turn. Leave a long tail to sew the ends together.

You're just going to do three rows of each.

For the C and sun
The sun and c is worked as one piece.
Hook size G/6- 4.25 MM

With yellow

Ch 3, sl st to join
I work in continuous rounds

Round 1- 6 SC
Round 2- 2 SC in each stitch, change colors to red at the end of the round (12)
Round 3- 1 SC in next 10 stitches ch 1, turn
Round 4- 2 SC in first stitch, 1 SC in next 3 stitches, 2 SC in next (4th) stitch, 1 SC in next 4 stitches, 2 SC in last stitch. Finish off and leave a long tail for both colors to sew onto the headband.

Sew the sun/c combo onto the headband. I like to place mine a little off center but place as you see fit and that's it!

If you don't want to make one, you can buy one on my etsy. :)

Crochet Hooks!

Who doesn't like a fun crochet hook? It's nice seeing all of these hooks side by side. I had a hard time getting the lighting right. I normally like to shoot during the day so I can get nice natural light but I was feeling a bit spontaneous and wanted to take a picture of these little guys.

If you would like you can buy a hook from me over on my etsy

I also have tutorials for all of these hooks if you don't want to buy one.

Crochet Chicago Blackhawks Beanie pattern

Can I let you in on a little secret? I'm actually an Avalanche fan. *gasp* There are a lot of Blackhawks fans in Colorado though. When I go to the Avs vs. Blackhawks game I always get a little jealous of all the cool things the fans can do. I've seen girls with feathers in their hair and people with face paint that matches the mascot. As an Avs fan we don't really have any of that. Our mascot is a dog for god's sake. I haven't come up with anything really awesome for us Avs fans yet but I did make a really cool Blackhawks beanie. I hope you enjoy!

For the hat, you can pretty much use whatever basic beanie pattern you like.

This is what I did for mine.

Hook size J/10- 6.00 MM

Ch 3, sl st together
I work in continuous rounds.

Round 1- 6 SC in center of the circle
Round 2- 2 DC in each stitch (12)
Round 3- 2 DC in each stitch (24)
Round 4- 2 DC in each stitch (48)
Round 5-14 (10 rounds, I never know how to count that)- 1 DC in each stitch
Round 15- 1 SC in each stitch
On the last row, sl st in 2nd stitch to even off the round.

For the feathers

You're going to do the same thing for all the feathers except the only difference is how many chains you start with.
I have an in depth blog about how to crochet the feathers that you can find here.

Hook size G/6- 4.25 MM

Red feather- Chain 13
Green feather- Chain 18
Yellow feather- Chain 21
Orange feather- Chain 26
Ch however many stitches you need, Sl st down the chain 2nd chain from the hook. Ch 1, turn
1. 1 SC in each stitch. When you get to the end of the row, put hook into other side of the chain and SC down the other side of the chain. Ch 1, turn
2. 1 SC in each stitch in the back loops only. Finish off, leave a long tail to sew onto the hat.
3. Add detail like the ribbing according to the mascot's colors.

The cool thing about the feather pattern is it is very versatile. If you don't like the feather sizes I used you can always chain a different amount and go from there.

Once all the feathers are done, just sew them on the hat as you see fit and that's it!

I really love how this hat came out! Perfect for all those hockey games! If you guys have any questions, always feel free to ask. I'm normally pretty quick at replying to comments and questions.

You can also buy one of these beanies from my etsy.  :)

Crochet Feathers Pattern

I wanted to make a Chicago Blackhawks beanie. I needed to find a feathers pattern but couldn't find one I really liked and I didn't want to pay for one. I ended up coming up with one on my own and it ended up being really easy to put together. This is what I came up with.

The good thing about this pattern is that it's really versatile. I have made four different sizes of feathers with it and they all come out great. It all just depends on how many chains you start with.

I'm using a hook size G/6-4.25MM

1. Chain 21

2. Slip stitch down the chain from the second chain from the hook for 20 stitches. Chain 1 and turn

3. 1 SC in each stitch

4. Instead of chaining and turning, we're going to start single crocheting on the other side. So, when you get to the end of the row you're going to put your hook in the chain on the other side and start your first single crochet.

5. 1 SC in each of the chains. There will be little holes. Single crochet into those little spaces. Chain 1, turn

6. 1 SC in every stitch, in the back loops only. This will create a nice little ridge.

Should look something like this when you're finished. Now we're going to add some details.

Use a contrasting color. Pull the yarn through the back and bring it forward and pull through the back again to create one stitch.Work down the middle spine of the feather.

This is the technique I'm going to be using for all the stitches. Pull the yarn through the back lower than the first stitch that was created and then pull through the front where the first stitch was created. Do this all the way down the spine of the feather.

Pull the yarn through the back outside of the ridge. Bring it forward and place it where there are breaks in the stitches and do the same thing on the other side.

Should look something like this. You can leave it like this or keep going. For the project I was doing I kept going.

I outlined the outside edges of my feather. If you want to do this just use the same technique as the rest of the feather.

That's it! That's how you crochet a feather. Remember that if you want to make different sizes you just have to chain a different amount and the rest of the directions stay the same.

Simpler directions

Ch 21 (or however big or small you want), Sl st down the chain 2nd chain from the hook. Ch 1, turn
1. 1 SC in each stitch. When you get to the end of the row, put hook into other side of the chain and SC down the other side of the chain. Ch 1, turn
2. 1 SC in each stitch in the back loops only. Finish off, leave a long tail if sewing onto something else.
3. Add detail if you want.

As always if you have any questions always feel free to ask. I'm normally pretty quick to respond to questions. :)
